Years at Camp: 1st summer in 2011

Department: Visual Art

Camp Bio:

This will be my first year at Camp Ballibay and I can hardly wait! I was particluarly interested in Camp Ballibay as a fine arts camp and am really excited to be a new member of staff. This will be a new experience for me as we don't have summer camps in the UK, I'm really looking forward to all the fun and more challenging times ahead! I will be working in Farm Arts and hope to be able to pass on new skills to the campers and introduce them to different forms of art.

I look forward to meeting campers and staff alike and making lots of new friends whilst experiencing a new way of life!

Professional/School Bio:

Art has always been a huge part of my life from an early age. My father works as a technical illustrator so it has always been a strong influence in my life. Throughout school, art was always the subject I looked forward to the most and often my strongest subject. I was lucky enough to have a very wacky art teacher throughout secondary school which has introduced me to everything and anything in the art world. Each lesson was usually a complete surprise, from drawing with sticks and ink right through to making shoes from cardboard and materials we could find around school! I was also very lucky to attend a school with very beautiful surroundings which meant a lot of studies were spent drawing and painting from life which taught me a lot about scale and composition. We spent each term moving from drawing and painting, ceramics and textiles which allowed me to experience each principle and think about mixing media to create more interesting pieces.

Whilst at school there was a lot of opportunity for volunteering schemes working with children. In the past I have worked at sports weeks in the summer with a mixed group of abled and disabled children, regular peer mentoring at a primary school and work experience at my own junior school.

I currently attend Leeds Metropolitan University studying Architecture. This is my final year of the undergraduate degree and has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life! It is more grounded in model making and computer graphics but encouraged me to think in terms of space, light and form. Drawing tends to be in a more technical style and so has to be much more controlled. The course has also taught me a lot about computer programs such as autoCAD, Photoshop and SketchUp which I now feel very competent in. With Architecture being a 7 year course in the UK, I still have a long way to go!
Architecture is a very work intensive course (it's not abnormal for students to spend 7am-9pm days in university right from first year!) but when I'm not studying, I enjoy all types of music and have been hoping to restart Horse Riding for some time. It is something I really enjoyed when I was younger but haven't had the time whilst at university.

I hope to be able to pass on my passion of art to campers and am really excited to work alongside all staff members and those with different specialties in art.

About the Staff of the Ballibay Camps

A key to the success of any camping season is staff. We spend a great deal of time screening and selecting our staff before every summer, and we have been fortunate to have many talented counselors and teachers remain with us season after season. Our staff members are predominantly educators and university students from the United States, although we also have a strong international component to our staff.

Our staff members come to us with outstanding credentials: professional experience, a background in teaching, and/or exceptional skills in their specialties. Most of all, we seek good, caring people who are interested in the well-being and growth of children. We look for people who, knowing something of the competitive nature of the adult world, are excited to put those concerns aside for a summer and focus on "the journey" in a non-competitive, fun, friendly environment.
