Karla Frazier Fandel

Years at Camp: 1st year in 2010

Department: Visual Art

Camp Bio:

This is my first summer at camp and I am so excited.

Professional/School Bio:

I live in Brooklyn with my Siamese cat Yoshimi. I am almost finished with my grad studies at Pratt Institute and in the end I will have an MFA in photography as well as an advanced teaching certificate. I have taught all kinds of art to many different ages from 7 years old to undergrad students. I just finished working with the Guggenheim museum teaching art to 4th graders in the Bronx.

I like cameras and daydreaming about photographs. The first time I went in a darkroom I fell in love. The darkroom is a magical place to be. I love watching other people fall in love with the darkroom too!

I can't express how much I love to teach art. It makes me really really happy.

About the Staff of the Ballibay Camps

A key to the success of any camping season is staff. We spend a great deal of time screening and selecting our staff before every summer, and we have been fortunate to have many talented counselors and teachers remain with us season after season. Our staff members are predominantly educators and university students from the United States, although we also have a strong international component to our staff.

Our staff members come to us with outstanding credentials: professional experience, a background in teaching, and/or exceptional skills in their specialties. Most of all, we seek good, caring people who are interested in the well-being and growth of children. We look for people who, knowing something of the competitive nature of the adult world, are excited to put those concerns aside for a summer and focus on "the journey" in a non-competitive, fun, friendly environment.
