Julia DeVillers

Years at Camp: 1st summer in 2011

Department: Media

Camp Bio:

This will be my first time at camp, and I'll be a writer-in-residence. I'm looking forward to collaborating with campers (and staff) to create a book set at, and about, the Ballibay Camps.

I'll be looking for writers, artists, photographers, editors and anyone who wants to contribute to a piece that will capture the philosophy and amazing experience of camp.

Professional/School Bio:

I'm a bestselling author (ok, I love being able to write that) of books for kids and teens. My books include HOW MY PRIVATE PERSONAL JOURNAL BECAME A BESTSELLER (now a Disney Channel tv movie called Read it and Weep), TRADING FACES (with my twin Jennifer Roy) and many more. My books have been featured in the NY Times, USA Today and all the major teen magazines.

You can read more about my books at my website: www.girlwise.com. I love what I do!

I just returned from a year overseas in former Soviet Republic of Georgia, while my husband worked at the US Embassy there. That was an adventure! I'm now back in the USA, living in Saratoga Springs, NY. I have a M.A. in journalism from The Ohio State University, and a B.A. in communications from SUNY Oswego.

It will be fun to create with campers and staff--and show it all off to camp parents.

About the Staff of the Ballibay Camps

A key to the success of any camping season is staff. We spend a great deal of time screening and selecting our staff before every summer, and we have been fortunate to have many talented counselors and teachers remain with us season after season. Our staff members are predominantly educators and university students from the United States, although we also have a strong international component to our staff.

Our staff members come to us with outstanding credentials: professional experience, a background in teaching, and/or exceptional skills in their specialties. Most of all, we seek good, caring people who are interested in the well-being and growth of children. We look for people who, knowing something of the competitive nature of the adult world, are excited to put those concerns aside for a summer and focus on "the journey" in a non-competitive, fun, friendly environment.
