Years at Camp: 3rd summer in 2011

Department: Visual Art

Camp Bio:

I am an Artist in Residence in the Farm Arts program. Last year the campers and I created the illustrious "Fort Magistrate". A life size fort with three major chambers and one private residence. All materials were scavenged from the Dining halls refuse, and all the Farm Arts staff pitched in with their specialties. Even some music people helped! The Cardboard Fort opened to the camp on the last day of the session for walk through tours while a video made with the campers posing in the space and our song (with the help of John Henry) "We're the Fort People" eerily rang throughout the rooms. I can't say enough about how much fun it was to work on this with the campers! You can see some of our process on the Ballibay youtube channel, where there are three video shot by John from different stages of the process. http://www.youtube.com/user/campballibay#p/u/19/dUwbYbdrvT0
As begun the previous year, my session ended with the "Give To Get" Lottery where objects and crafts made were auctioned to other craft makers. Everyone who entered won another camper or staff's prize object.
This year I'm sure to be will be working on lots of fun and engaging things!

Professional/School Bio:

My artwork is mixed in medium, it is often participatory and adaptable to various
Communities. I like to collaborate and work with lots of people. Very
process oriented, the outcome tends to integrate a wide range of
materials and mediums from visual arts/ drawing, painting, bookmaking,
ceramics to electronics, video and songwriting. I like to think of
myself as a folk artist.

I went to Antioch College for Media and Communications, the graduated from The San Francisco Art Institute in Video and Performance Art. I spent a lot of time afterward traveling and moved to NYC in 1996. For several years I worked in the NYC Public Schools as an Artist in Resident teaching students and staff media / video and helping them to integrate it into their curriculum. Later with a Full merit scholarship, I attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Integrated Electronic Arts Program. I am an Adjunct Professor at Pace University in the Art Department teaching video. I am also an official New York State Notary who specializes in personal oaths and affirmations.

About the Staff of the Ballibay Camps

A key to the success of any camping season is staff. We spend a great deal of time screening and selecting our staff before every summer, and we have been fortunate to have many talented counselors and teachers remain with us season after season. Our staff members are predominantly educators and university students from the United States, although we also have a strong international component to our staff.

Our staff members come to us with outstanding credentials: professional experience, a background in teaching, and/or exceptional skills in their specialties. Most of all, we seek good, caring people who are interested in the well-being and growth of children. We look for people who, knowing something of the competitive nature of the adult world, are excited to put those concerns aside for a summer and focus on "the journey" in a non-competitive, fun, friendly environment.
