Jennilie Brewster

Years at Camp: 1st summer in 2011

Department: Visual Art

Camp Bio:

Together, we will create a constructed landscape. Our intention will be to respond directly to what we see and feel both outdoors and in the project space. We will begin with the sky—using gouache to think about its various shades of blue and the interplay of light and dark in the clouds. We will tack our paintings to the wall forming one giant cloudscape. We will explore cloud nature through other means and materials such as words, paper mache, glitter, etc. This will be our backdrop. From here the project will evolve organically, spilling out into the room like a museum diorama.

Professional/School Bio:

Jennilie Brewster grew up on a farm in Maryland and has been living in Brooklyn for the past 10 years. She makes paintings and installations that explore the relationships between our internal and external landscapes. Brewster graduated with an MFA (2007) from Bard College in Upstate New York and with a BFA (2002) from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has been a resident artist at the Santa Fe Art Institute, Headlands Center for the Arts and Djerassi (both in CA), UCROSS Foundation (WY) and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (NE).

Currently, she is collaborating on a multi-disciplinary project, “64 Paintings, 64 Plays,” which will be featured in the second annual RE/Mixed Media Festival in Brooklyn in the fall.

About the Staff of the Ballibay Camps

A key to the success of any camping season is staff. We spend a great deal of time screening and selecting our staff before every summer, and we have been fortunate to have many talented counselors and teachers remain with us season after season. Our staff members are predominantly educators and university students from the United States, although we also have a strong international component to our staff.

Our staff members come to us with outstanding credentials: professional experience, a background in teaching, and/or exceptional skills in their specialties. Most of all, we seek good, caring people who are interested in the well-being and growth of children. We look for people who, knowing something of the competitive nature of the adult world, are excited to put those concerns aside for a summer and focus on "the journey" in a non-competitive, fun, friendly environment.
