KRISTIN ALEXANDER

Hometown:

Returning, Camper
Attended Camp:
1988-1993; 1998-2023

Kristin has danced her way through the summers from camper to camp director and will be returning to Ballibay for her 29th year . She can still remember walking into her cabin in 1988 as a new camper, helping to choreograph musicals as a counselor-in-training, and teaching tap as a first-year counselor. After a four-year hiatus, she returned to Ballibay and it has remained her summer home. Some of her fondest memories are working alongside Jerry and Dottie Jannone as she became a member of the camp leadership. For the past 10 years she has co-directed the camp with John, a partnership fueled by creativity and gratitude for one another. This summer, Kristin is most looking forward to seeing colleagues and returning campers after a challenging year, meeting everyone joining the Ballibay community for the first time, and sharing the dance studio with the campers during the dance intensive!

Professional Bio:
Kristin is an assistant professor of dance at the College of Charleston and the founding artistic director of Annex Dance Company. She has taught, performed, and collaborated with companies and choreographers throughout the United States. From 2002 to 2010 Kristin was an associate professor of dance at DeSales University (Pennsylvania), and she returned in 2012 for a semester as acting chair of the dance department. In 2010, Kristin made Charleston, South Carolina, her new home, thus allowing Annex Dance Company to join the city’s thriving arts community. The company is committed to arts advocacy and opportunities for dancers at all levels, students through professionals. As artists and educators, members of the company have worked with students in Charleston County Schools through Engaging Creative Minds and conducted residencies and masterclasses at festivals and colleges, including a collaborative performance residency at College of Charleston during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. She serves on the City of Charleston’s Commission on the Arts and was recently appointed the chair of the School of the Arts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee at the College of Charleston. Zach Brewer

ZACHARY BREWER

Pronouns: he/him
Hometown:
Brooklyn, NY
Parent, Returning
Attended Camp:
2021, 2022, 2023

Every year that I get to come to Ballibay and work with the young people there is an absolute gift. My first year at camp I was a part of the rock staff, coaching bands and giving guitar and bass meetups. Last year I returned for part of the session as head of rock. I loved working with the other coaches and division heads. I consider it to be a tremendous responsibility guiding young people in their process of creative collaboration. Being in a band and, generally, working with other people is a wonderful and challenging opportunity for so much growth in so many ways. The campers are not just joining a band, they are navigating a complex and intricate art form that uniquely combines this ephemeral creation of music, and brash, dramatic performance which culminates in a rock show. I sincerely look forward to returning this year as Head of Rock, working with and learning from all the campers and staff.

Professional Bio:
Zachary Brewer is a music producer, engineer, musical director, and performing musician based in Brooklyn, NY. Zach’s approach to music combines a disciplined practice with an acceptance and embrace of limitations, and happy accidents. Zach has deep, fundamental music skills and experience, gathered over 25 years of writing and recording songs and traveling the world performing music. Zach has toured extensively, sharing the stage with a diverse list of artists such as Caveman, Heaven, Caroline Kingsbury, The Fresh and Onlys, Crocodiles, Wymond Miles, Rykarda Parasol and the Tower Ravens, and Caves. He has toured in support of many artists, opening for The Killers, Ratatat, Muse, Kevin Morby, Cass McCombs, St Lucia, and Supergrass.
